This is a message of the heart, not the pocketbook. To have the gift of being able to give freely to others is one of the most profound ways of experiencing God's very nature. When we reach out and give of our time, our talents, our resources and our finances we are in essence saying to God, "Father, I am blessing you with what you gave to me." How compelling would it be for any father to receive this from his child? 
"Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you." Luke 6:38 (NIV)
We are demonstrating a heart not bent on approval or getting something in return, but instead we are demonstrating a heart filled with God. As a natural consequence of this type of freedom of the heart, we are given so much more in return.
The first step in acquiring this "blessing of generosity," which indeed returns even more than we can imagine , is the willingness to give with "no strings attached." This can be a hard step for some since this means surrendering something that we currently think we have control. The key word being "control."
It is in the surrender that we gain the freedom that money, people, places or things that may have control over us. By surrender you are trusting in God with everything you have and the peace that surpasses all understanding becomes known.
So money or material things is not the means to the end, it has no real meaning, other than a means of worldly bartering. But the heart is eternal, and while we are looking to the end God is watching the very process itself.
